Reading and searching
Google AdSense code is included on reading pages. Optional Google Analytics visit measurement is available. Public comment forms are not active. Site search and filters operate in your browser, with no search service behind them. On the ledgers, the search page and other lists, what you type is also added to the page address, as q= followed by your words, along with any filter you choose, so reloading the page keeps the same results. Typing sends nothing to the site’s server, but the address can then go where a page address normally goes: to the hosting provider if you reload or reopen it, and to Google Analytics if you allow visit measurement (see below). Google’s ad code on the page can also see it. The search page loads neither visit measurement nor ads.
Newsletter signup
The Pardon Ledger newsletter is published on Substack. The signup boxes on this site are plain forms that load no Substack script. When you press the button, your browser sends the email address you typed directly to Substack, with a marker saying it came from a signup form, and the newsletter’s page on Substack opens in a new tab; Substack then emails you a welcome message. Substack also receives technical request information, such as your IP address and this site’s address as the referring origin. This site’s server never receives or stores the address. You can also sign up on Substack’s own page. Either way, Substack holds your email address under its own privacy terms and makes the subscriber list available to the publisher for sending the newsletter, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.
Optional visit measurement
If you choose Allow measurement, this site loads Google Analytics to measure page views, campaign referrals and selected link clicks. Google receives technical request information, including your IP address and browser information, and may store Analytics cookies. The publisher receives reports about use of the site. We disable Google signals and advertising personalization in this Analytics connection. The website’s own measurement code leaves the query, including any search text, out of the page address it reports, and does not add contribution amounts or contact details to events. Google’s enhanced measurement works separately. It is switched on for this site and records interactions such as scrolling, downloads and clicks to other websites. It also records a page view with the full address, including what you typed, when a search or filter box changes the address, and the search term when a page opens with one in its address. Those records can appear in the reports the publisher receives.
Your choice is stored on this browser. Select Visit measurement settings in the footer to change it; declining stops further Analytics collection and clears its first-party cookies on this domain. Hosting and external services
The hosting provider may process technical request information to deliver and protect the site. Each page requests its fonts from Google Fonts, which creates a connection from your browser to that service. Source links open third-party websites with their own privacy practices.
Offline reading and the home-screen app
This site registers a service worker in your browser. It stores copies of the Pardon Ledger, the clemency lookup, the search page and the pages you open in your browser’s storage on your device, so they can be read without a connection. Those copies stay on your device and are not sent to the publisher or anyone else.
A web app manifest lets you add the Ledger to your home screen. The home-screen icon opens /pardons/?app=1. The ?app=1 marker is sent each time the icon is opened with a connection, so openings from the home screen can be counted in the hosting provider’s request logs, and it is sent whether or not you allow visit measurement. It is the same for every reader and does not identify you. Google’s ad code on that page can also see the full address. Installing adds no account and no cookies.
Reader contributions
Support links open the publisher’s Stripe payment page or its GoFundMe fundraiser. Each provider processes payment details under its own privacy terms and may provide the publisher with transaction and donor information for receipts and support. GoFundMe may show a donor’s name and amount on the fundraiser unless the donor chooses to give anonymously. Card details are not entered on the Ledger.
Sharing and email
Share buttons open Facebook, X, Bluesky, Reddit or WhatsApp with the page link and, where supported, prepared text. These services receive the shared link and any included text when opened; their own privacy practices apply. Device sharing and copy-link controls are also available. Nothing posts automatically: you choose whether to publish or send. Email contact links open your mail app. If you choose to send an email, the publisher and email providers receive the information you send; correspondence is used to handle the inquiry. No response time or deletion schedule is promised here.
Google advertising and your choices
Reading pages load Google AdSense, which connects your browser to Google. Google may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser details and the page visited. Whether ads appear depends on site approval, account settings and applicable consent choices.
Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to show ads based on earlier visits to this website or other websites. Google’s advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to personalize ads across participating sites. Other participating ad networks may also use cookies.
You can manage personalized advertising through Google My Ad Center and participating vendors’ choices through YourAdChoices. These choices do not necessarily remove all ads.
