WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS

The Justice Department's clemency list places Klecko — entered as Joseph Klecko — in the February 12, 2026 group of seven pardons, records his conviction in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and gives his sentence as three months' imprisonment and two years' supervised release, imposed April 8, 1993. That is the earliest of the four sentencing dates the list gives for the five former players in this grant; Billy Cannon's row carries no sentencing date at all. The Associated Press account carried by NPR reports that the former New York Jets defensive lineman pleaded guilty to perjury after lying to a federal grand jury investigating insurance fraud, that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023, and that he was a two-time Associated Press All-Pro and a four-time Pro Bowler. No donation, lobbying payment or other payment connected to this pardon appears in the entry or its sources, and none of the cited reports carries a statement from Klecko about the pardon.

RESPONSE

The cited reports include no statement from Klecko. White House pardon czar Alice Marie Johnson, who announced the grants, thanked Trump for what she called his continued commitment to second chances, and NPR reported that the White House did not return a request for comment on why Trump pardoned the players.

Correction to the shared entry, Five former NFL players. An earlier version called all five convictions decades old. The Justice Department list gives sentencing dates from 1993 to 2009, and The Hill dates Billy Cannon’s counterfeiting case to 1983. Corrected September 18, 2026.
