Kalshi investigates bets placed before Trump’s press-secretary announcement

Kalshi inquiry confirmed; no trader publicly identified and no regulatory violation finding announced

Donald Trump

Prediction-market operator Kalshi is investigating trades that correctly anticipated President Donald Trump’s selection of Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary before the announcement, Reuters reported, citing The Wall Street Journal and a Kalshi spokesperson. The Journal reported that three wagers totaling about $173 were placed while Zacharia was priced at roughly a 1% chance and could pay about $9,600 combined. Kalshi’s public market page confirms that the contract resolved ‘Yes’ for Zacharia and displays total market volume, but it does not identify the traders or establish how they obtained their information.

Response / context

Kalshi confirmed the inquiry but declined further comment. No CFTC charge, order or other public regulatory finding tied to these wagers was identified at review time. Their timing may justify scrutiny, but it does not itself prove misuse of nonpublic information, White House involvement or wrongdoing by Zacharia; the reviewed reports did not allege that she placed or directed the wagers. In a separate August case, the CFTC found that former White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez used material nonpublic speech information to trade prediction-market contracts. That enforcement action is relevant precedent, not evidence about the Zacharia wagers.

Event or conduct: Oct 9, 2026 · Reuters and The Wall Street Journal reported October 9 that Kalshi had opened an inquiry into wagers placed before Trump announced Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary. Kalshi confirmed the inquiry to Reuters.

What this check covered

One material development is published for October 11. Kalshi confirmed that it is investigating wagers placed before Donald Trump announced Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary. The brief separates the existence of that inquiry from any finding: no trader has been publicly identified, no regulatory charge or violation finding tied to these wagers was identified, and the reviewed reporting does not allege wrongdoing by Zacharia.

Review the source-check log

The existence of Kalshi’s inquiry is confirmed; an inquiry is not a finding of misconduct.

No reviewed source publicly identified the traders or alleged that Katie Zacharia placed, directed or knew of the wagers.

The August CFTC action against Gabriel Perez concerns different contracts and conduct and is included only to explain the regulator’s prior treatment of material nonpublic information in event markets.
