AP, citing The New York Times, reported Vietnam’s government pushed farmers off land for the project. Reuters reported Vietnam fast-tracked approvals as it negotiated a trade deal with Washington.

Reuters reported that Vietnamese authorities approved the project in May 2025, the week before Vietnam’s prime minister and Eric Trump held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 21. Month-precision date (first of the month).
RESPONSE
The Trump Organization denied direct business with the government.
Correction. An earlier version listed the Vietnamese government as a counterparty and said the amount was not disclosed. Reuters reports that the developer is Kinhbac City and its partners and that the Trump Organization was paid a $5 million brand-licensing fee; AP reported that Vietnam’s deputy prime minister signed off on the deal.
