Nearly $12M in taxpayer-funded Trump ads has aired; repayment remains unresolved

Future political funding announced; nearly $12 million in prior federal spending remains without a repayment commitment

Donald Trump

AP reports that nearly $12 million worth of promotional television ads featuring Trump had aired using federal funds by October 6, part of a $20 million Department of Homeland Security contract. Trump and the White House said MAGA Inc. would fund such ads going forward, but Trump did not commit to repaying the money already spent when asked.

Response / context

Trump defended the ads as positive promotion for the country and said similar promotion had been done by other presidents. Asked on October 6 whether he would repay the prior spending, he said, 'we'll decide.' A White House official told AP that the announced switch to MAGA Inc. did not mean reimbursement was coming. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer alleged illegal coordination; that is a lawmaker's allegation, not a court or enforcement finding.
