Most Port Shuaiba families absent from White House reception amid invitation concerns

Reception held; family accounts and Army investigation-disclosure questions remain unresolved

Donald Trump

The Associated Press reports that only one family member among the families of six U.S. soldiers killed in the March 1 Iranian drone strike at Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, confirmed plans to attend Trump's October 6 White House reception for Gold Star families. At least two families told AP they did not receive invitations, while others cited short notice, cost, grief or objections to the administration. The White House said the broader event honored nearly 40 fallen service members from conflicts dating to the Vietnam War.

Response / context

The White House said it does not contact people who ask not to be contacted and said it attempted to invite relatives of Maj. Cody Khork. Those explanations address two families and do not establish a single cause for every absence. AP reports that the Army completed its Port Shuaiba investigation in June but has not released the findings while redactions continue; the Army and Pentagon declined to comment on AP's underlying reporting. Soldiers' claims that warnings were ignored and care was inadequate, and families' complaints about transparency, are allegations and firsthand accounts rather than adjudicated findings. A separate White House proclamation pledged support for Gold Star families but did not address the invitation disputes or the Army investigation.
