Trump touts $6.6 billion Anduril-Navy submarine shipyard project

Project and contract announced; investment, hiring and production targets remain forward-looking

Donald Trump

Reuters, the Associated Press and Maryland officials report that Anduril Industries plans to invest $3.7 billion in a software-defined shipyard at Sparrows Point, Maryland, while the Navy has awarded a contract worth up to $2.9 billion for Virginia-class submarine components including torpedo tubes and doors. Trump promoted the project at the site. AP reports that taxpayers are to receive a 40% stake in the shipyard.

Response / context

Maryland's government calls the project the state's largest single private investment and job-creation announcement in more than a decade. Reuters reports that payments are tied to production outcomes and that Anduril assumes most execution risk. The $6.6 billion headline total combines planned private capital with the maximum value of a government contract; it is not money already spent. The projected 3,100 direct jobs, 11,000 indirect jobs and production near the end of the decade are forecasts. The cited record does not allege that the award was improper.
