Reuters review finds 41 of 62 Republicans in competitive races creating distance from Trump
Source published: Oct 7, 2026 · 6:02 AM EDT · Event: 2026-10-07
Reuters reports that 41 of 62 Republican candidates in competitive U.S. House and Senate races had either diverged from President Donald Trump on at least one policy or played down ties to him. The review examined voting records, public statements and campaign materials. It found policy differences in 23 races and said 12 candidates had removed Trump's name, image or endorsement from campaign websites. These are Reuters' classifications, not an official party tally or a finding about the candidates' motives.
Response / context
The candidates Reuters identified generally did not reject Trump's broader agenda. The article describes issue-specific disagreements, event decisions and campaign-site changes, and notes that direct criticism remained rare. White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded that Trump is the party's unequivocal leader and strongest messenger. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks is one Reuters example: the House Clerk records that she voted yes on September 15 for a resolution directing removal of U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran, one of seven Republican yes votes; the resolution passed the House 220-204. Reuters also reported that she later appeared with Trump at the White House. The Ledger did not independently reproduce Reuters' complete 62-race coding or verify every historical campaign-site change, so the 41-of-62 and 12-site counts remain attributed to Reuters.
