Trump Justice Department opens antitrust probe of White House television pool
Source published: Oct 10, 2026 · 9:05 PM EDT · Event: 2026-10-10
The Trump Justice Department said its Antitrust Division is investigating whether ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News violated federal competition law when the television networks temporarily suspended pooled White House coverage. The networks acted after the White House revoked credentials for CNN, Politico and MS NOW. A department spokesperson said coordinated group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act and described the action as an inquiry to determine whether the networks broke the law.
Response / context
The department's statement identifies an investigative theory, not a factual or legal finding that the networks unlawfully colluded. Reuters and the Washington Post reported that the five networks had not immediately responded. The television pool is a longstanding cost-sharing arrangement in which networks rotate responsibility and distribute footage to other outlets; coverage resumed after a federal judge ordered the White House to restore the excluded organizations' access. In the related press-access case, Judge Timothy Kelly temporarily found the outlets likely to succeed on a due-process claim and ordered credentials restored, but the court has not adjudicated the separate antitrust question. The investigation's scope, process and evidence have not been made public, and no civil complaint or criminal charge was identified at review time.
