Trump calls for Ukraine to replace Zelenskyy after Russian diesel deal
Source published: Oct 10, 2026 · 3:03 PM EDT · Event: 2026-10-10
President Donald Trump said Ukraine should get a new president, arguing that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had failed to make a peace agreement with Russia. Trump also blamed Zelenskyy and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries for pressure on U.S. diesel prices. The remarks came one day after Trump announced that the United States would lift sanctions to permit large Russian diesel supplies, reversing part of the pressure campaign against Moscow weeks before U.S. midterm elections.
Response / context
Zelenskyy said the diesel arrangement would provide Russia additional revenue for weapons, drones, missiles and recruitment, and accused Moscow of responding to the sanctions relief with deadly attacks on civilians. Reuters and AP reported that Russian strikes killed at least 20 people, including three children, in Zaporizhzhia on October 10; Reuters said it could not independently verify battlefield claims. Trump asserted that Ukraine had lost 30% of its territory and that more than two million people had been killed. AP reported that independent estimates put Russian control at about 20% and that reliable recent casualty totals are unavailable. European officials said they would maintain sanctions and support for Ukraine. Trump's remarks are a political and diplomatic intervention, not evidence that the United States can select or remove Ukraine's elected president.
