Kushner's volunteer envoy role faces a lawsuit over power and financial disclosure

Civil complaint filed; Kushner's lawyer disputes its merits and standing; no ruling identified in the reviewed sources

Jared Kushner · Donald Trump

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington sued Jared Kushner and administration entities and officials on October 14, seeking to halt his exercise of diplomatic authority and require public financial disclosures. Its 45-page complaint argues that his continuing negotiations for the United States make him a government officer subject to the Appointments Clause, rather than simply a private volunteer. It separately seeks disclosure relief under the Ethics in Government Act and, alternatively, challenges delegating government power to a private person. CREW says the overlap with his investment business creates conflict risks. These are a plaintiff's claims and requested remedies, not findings that Kushner broke the law or used a negotiation for personal gain.

Response / context

Bloomberg reports that Kushner's lawyer, Chad Mizelle, rejects the suit and disputes CREW's standing. Mizelle says outside and government ethics lawyers reviewed the arrangement, that Kushner receives no government compensation and pays his own expenses. White House spokesperson Anna Kelley says his private business is unrelated to his volunteer diplomacy at the president's request. The complaint itself cites Kushner's earlier denial that he used diplomacy to benefit himself, Affinity Partners or its investors. No court ruling on these competing positions was identified in the reviewed material. The filing is a civil challenge to his role and disclosure obligations, not a criminal charge or conviction.
