Judge dismisses Trump administration challenge to New York City sanctuary laws

Complaint dismissed and clerk directed to close the case; no appeal identified in the reviewed sources

Donald Trump

A federal judge dismissed the Trump administration's lawsuit seeking to invalidate New York City laws that limit local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The October 15 order says the United States lacked Article III standing because invalidating the city's detention restrictions would not overcome independent New York state-law limits, and because the alleged information-sharing injuries were not traceable to the challenged city provisions. The court also ruled that the government's federal-preemption theories fail and that the requested relief would conflict with the Tenth Amendment's anti-commandeering doctrine.

Response / context

The Justice Department argued that the city provisions obstruct federal immigration enforcement, conflict with federal law and unlawfully discriminate against or regulate the federal government. Judge Ramón E. Reyes Jr. rejected those theories, granted New York City's motion to dismiss and directed the clerk to close the case. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the ruling a victory for New Yorkers and a rejection of efforts to turn city workers into deportation agents. Reuters and Gothamist reported that the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No appeal was identified at the time of review.
