Vance says Iran must cut enrichment capacity to end war

Administration negotiating position stated; no peace agreement or accepted enrichment limit announced

Donald Trump

In a Reuters interview, Vice President JD Vance said Iran must significantly reduce its uranium-enrichment capacity to end the war with the United States. Vance, who has participated in negotiations, also said the administration is uncertain which Iranian officials have authority to make decisions after the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Trump separately said his biggest problem was that nobody knew who was running Iran.

Response / context

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said U.S. officials know their Iranian counterparts and Iran's decision-making system, and blamed contradictory U.S. positions and mixed messaging. Vance also rejected concerns about critical U.S. munitions shortages and said Iran was largely unable to stop energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz. These are competing government claims and negotiating positions, not independently established findings. Reuters reported that the war costs about $3 billion per month; no end-war agreement or specific accepted enrichment threshold was announced.
