Trump endorses Netanyahu and links Iran policy to Israel's election
Source published: Oct 18, 2026 · 11:12 AM EDT · Event: 2026-10-18
President Donald Trump formally endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for reelection nine days before Israel's October 27 parliamentary vote. Reuters and the Associated Press independently reported Trump's social-media statement. Trump praised Netanyahu as a partner against Iran and said that if Israel chose anyone else, the United States might have to act alone against Iran and that he was not inclined to do so.
Response / context
Netanyahu thanked Trump and said the two would complete their mission together. Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot said Israeli voters alone would choose the next prime minister and said he had asked that there be no intervention in Israel's election. Reuters and AP said the endorsement's electoral effect is uncertain. Trump's warning describes his stated preference and possible future conduct; it is not evidence that U.S. policy has changed or that new military action has been ordered.
