Court filing outlines possible removal of 529 trees at East Potomac golf course

New removal phases disclosed in court; broader golf-course redesign remains under evaluation and disputed in pending litigation

Donald Trump

A new National Park Service filing in federal court says crews will begin a phase removing 169 trees at East Potomac Golf Links, followed by a 90-tree phase, with as many as 529 trees potentially removed. The Park Service says the work addresses deferred maintenance, invasive vegetation and restoration of the course's historic landscape, and would proceed even if the Trump administration abandons its proposed championship-course overhaul. The filing says the work will not alter holes, routing, greens, bunkers or landforms.

Response / context

Plaintiffs challenging the proposed overhaul contend that the administration is implementing the larger project in pieces while labeling early work as maintenance. The government says the current tree work is separately authorized and does not commit the agency to a future design. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes previously declined to stop an earlier round of removals after the government said those trees were invasive, dead, dying or hazardous. That earlier ruling did not decide whether every tree in the newly disclosed phases may lawfully be removed or whether the broader redesign may proceed. The administration still had not released a final design, cost, funding plan or closure schedule at the time of review.
