Trump calls Brazil result 'rigged' as Bolsonaro party recognizes Lula win
Source published: Oct 24, 2026 · 8:59 PM EDT · Event: 2026-10-24
Brazil's Superior Electoral Court announced that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won reelection on October 25 with 64,256,232 valid votes (51.79%), while Senator Flavio Bolsonaro received 59,826,041 (48.21%). On October 26, Liberal Party president Valdemar Costa Neto said the party recognized the result. Trump then told reporters the election looked 'rigged' and 'corrupt,' but presented no evidence. Reuters reported that fewer than 35,000 votes were cast during the disputed two-hour extension, compared with Lula's margin of more than 4.4 million votes. No court ruling annulling, suspending or changing the certified result was identified during the Ledger's review.
Response / context
Trump said he had not taken sides, described Lula as someone he likes and gets along with, and criticized the tabulation and two-hour extension. Reuters reported his allegation as unsupported by evidence. The same report says Bolsonaro had not commented publicly after his party recognized the result and agreed to comply with a federal-police order to surrender his passport. Bolsonaro's initial annulment demand therefore remains a political statement, not a granted motion or judgment. On Reuters' earlier investigation, the White House declined comment and State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott defended U.S. counter-narcotics and free-speech actions without answering the specific questions about alleged election-related directives. Public records confirm the sanctions, tariffs and gang designations but do not establish Reuters' reported internal electoral purpose.
