Pentagon official alleges leaks after Hegseth removes Joint Staff strategy chief
Source published: Oct 29, 2026 · 7:01 AM EDT · Event: 2026-10-28
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia from his position as director for strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff, the Associated Press and The Washington Post reported. The office, known as J5, helps develop military strategy and coordinate plans and policy. CBS News later reported that one unnamed Pentagon official accused Sylvia of leaking classified information concerning the Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars, failing three polygraph examinations and being referred to the Justice Department. Task & Purpose reported that Sylvia is retiring. The Ledger found no public referral record, criminal charge or adjudicated finding supporting the allegations. No successor was identified by the review time.
Response / context
The Joint Staff initially thanked Sylvia and his family for 32 years of service without explaining his departure. After the leak allegations were reported, Task & Purpose quoted a Joint Staff spokesperson saying it would not comment further out of respect for Sylvia and the ongoing personnel process. The Pentagon did not answer whether the departure was a firing, dismissal or forced retirement and directed questions to the Joint Staff. The Washington Post reported that attempts to reach Sylvia were unsuccessful. CBS attributed the misconduct, polygraph and referral claims to a single anonymous Pentagon official; no on-record evidentiary explanation, primary investigative document, DOJ confirmation or response from Sylvia was identified. A referral, if made, would not establish guilt or guarantee charges. The timing overlaps with reporting that President Trump is considering renewed military action against Iran, but the reviewed sources do not establish that operational planning caused Sylvia's removal.
