WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
The federal sentences were commuted to time served, but Hoover was then transferred from federal to Illinois custody, the Chicago Sun-Times reported in May 2026. He is serving a 200-year state sentence for a 1973 murder, which a president cannot commute.
RESPONSE
Hoover’s lawyers welcomed the commutation and said they would seek state relief.
